First Go on Vel’Koz

I bought some RP today during the Riot RP sale and snagged the newest champ, Vel’Koz. I was stoked when I immediately rolled him in ARAM post purchase. After politely declining several trade offers, I went into the match with zero experience playing him.

First off, I personally think he is the most wicked-looking champion in game with his octopus-like arms waving as he glides across the field. Like most mages, he isn’t strong early, but once I got to about level 11, he really started to shine. He is also not a mana hog. I had purchased a Chalice of Harmony as one of my starting items and I never ran out of mana during the early game even though I was continually spamming my skills. I would guess he can farm like crazy on Summoner’s Rift with his W and I started playing with the angles of sending out my Q (it really does open up some interesting possibilities in terms of target).

The biggest challenge I had playing him was getting used to his ultimate. It is channeled (so can be interrupted) and requires you to aim with your cursor but the difficulty is that you are rooted in place during the channel. This makes you not only extremely vulnerable (unless willing to cut things short and run) but is also a challenge to make sure you are within range before beginning (or even better, closer than max range so that your targets don’t just walk outside the beam). Regardless, it is quite fun to drag your cursor to continue dishing out the damage as an enemy futilely attempts escape.

Of all the things I loved about playing him, though, the best is likely his overall damage output. I managed to blow away everyone else on the field with 153K damage in a 30-minute match. I am guessing that the addition of the true damage due to stacks of Deconstruction is a big part of that. Odds are that the nerf gun will eventually clobber him but I would highly recommend picking him up for a change of pace and the fun of piling up loads of damage.

Lux Rox

So I have had Lux in my arsenal for a long time now. For the life of me I can’t recall why I haven’t really played her. Maybe because her brother, Garen, annoys me so?

But after watching stream after stream come through with Lux as part of a ranked team, plus how much I and everyone else hates her ult when playing against her (it’s amazing how hard it is to get out of the way of that red laser warning), I decided to give her a spin. In fact, I think today is the first time I have ever played her, go figure!

Net net is that she is a complete and total blast to play! How have I been missing out for so long? Her ult is as amazing as one would expect and I am happy to say that the “aaaaayah!” that she yells just prior is quite satisfying (as opposed to annoying). Then you have a stun, a slow and a shield, the latter of which I never used and spec’d last but likely very useful once I learn to maximize its boomerang goodness. Gonna keep playing her against intermediate bots until I have it down and then voila, another gal I can pull out in Normal draft matches.

Lovin’ Quinn

I broke down last night and loaded some RP on my account to buy the Phoenix Quinn bundle. I haven’t played her in Classic yet but she is a total blast in Dominion! Her Vault move on E is perfect for defending your towers and she gets great movement speed boosts from W. Curious to see how she will play in Classic.

Under Everything

Lee Sin was ready and I jungled for the first time tonight. Had my Summoner’s Rift map with all the jungle mobs identified sitting next to me on the couch for reference (super geek, she’s a super geek, yaw yaw).

I played two custom games then joined a beg bots game. I did pretty well in one of the 2 custom games against bots, which doesn’t count for much, but unlike the other 2 games, I wasn’t underleveled and gold starved. Will have to check out proper jungle builds and runes and generally figure out how to level up as quickly as my mates in lane. Not certain why that 2nd custom game was so much better but I think it was because I was successfully ganking, providing me with the kills I needed to stay on level with my team.

What I do like about jungling is it is a new challenge. One of the many things I luv about League is that there is layer after layer after layer of learning possible. Fun, fun, fun!!

Zyra Way Fun

Purchased Zyra a bit ago but never gave her an initial spin. Must say she is a total blast to play and one of the best First Go’s on a toon in a long time. She’s gorgeous in game, her dialogue is entertaining, and the interaction between plants and spells is fun not to mention challenging and quite powerful. I also seemed to have no mana issues though I picked up an Athene’s Unholy Grail early in game. She’s gonna be getting more play time for sure!

First Go on Taric

So you know it’s gonna be a bad match when you die at level 1. It’s been forever since that has happened to me, and in Classic Bots? OMG, shameful. Ended up with 16 assists and spent a lovely long time just wiping out champs on their platform with Thresh and someone else, hovering at low health but totally wiping them out time after time, which was very fun, but I am a long way from mastering him. About what I would expect on first go.

And don’t know if he says anything annoying, I had the volume turned all the way down.

First Go on Orianna

She was on sale recently. Bought her cuz I am just a few gals away from my quest to have all of ’em. Played a miserable round of Classic / Beginner Bots with her on first go. Truly sucked. Totally off a good rhythm after bout level 5. Near the end I started to get the hang of chaining Q and E but long way from getting comfortable and keeping track of the ball. Gonna try again.
